Why it matters

Emotions matter. Emotionally intelligent leaders handle hard conversations, difficult relationships and change well because they treat feelings as inputs to plan for, not obstacles to get past.

Chuck Wolfe Chuck Wolfe · Creator of the Emotion Roadmap™

The method

The Emotion Roadmap™: four questions that turn feelings into a plan.

When smart, capable people get stuck, strong emotions are almost always involved. The Roadmap gives leaders a repeatable way to work through them, for one hard conversation or a company-wide change.

  1. 1
    Current state

    Identify

What are we feeling now, and what are key others feeling?

Name who is involved and how each person really feels. Naming the emotion is the first move.

  2. 2
    Ideal future state

    Use

What would be ideal to feel in this situation?

Some feelings help a task more than others. Choose the emotional state most likely to lead to success.

  3. 3
    Gap analysis

    Understand

How can we create the feelings we want?

Understand why people feel the way they do, and what it would take to shift those feelings.

  4. 4
    Execute & modify

    Manage

What are we willing and able to do?

Problem solving creates options. Managing means choosing the one people are willing and able to act on.
